Chronos brings you a complete range of engineering collets. The selection of a holding mechanism for turning comes down to using either chucks or collets. Collets are holding devices used by engineers. Specifically, a collet is a chuck that forms a collar around the object to be held. A collet exerts a strong clamping force on the object when it is tightened by means of a tapered outer collar.

An external collet is a sleeve with a cylindrical inner surface and a conical outer surface. The collet can be squeezed against a matching taper so that its inner surface contracts to a slightly smaller diameter which squeezes the tool or workpiece.
An internal collet is used to lock two telescoping tubes together. In this case the collet is in the form of a truncated cone drilled and threaded down the centreline. The inner tube is often slotted to facilitate this expansion.
Choosing the right collet chuck begins by identifying the spindle nose of the machine on which the chuck will be mounted. The next step is to determine the chuck’s required capacity, based upon the size of the parts that need to be held. For bar feeding applications, it is customary to match, or slightly exceed, the machines drawtube bore size.
Once the spindle mount and required capacity have been identified, the selection can be further narrowed based on specific features and benefits of the various models, including pullback versus dead-length operation; external clearance dimensions; RPM capability; and setup time requirements.
Collet chucks’ compact size improves tool clearance, maximises Z-axis capacity and aids in rigidity. Readily available round, square, hex, internal expanding and emergency collets offer broad flexibility.
